Summary:
It is 2008. You are one of the 12 racers in one of the 4 divisions. Starting off at the bottom of Division IV, you can get promoted each season to the next division (Division III in this case) by scoring the most points out of the three racers in that division. Alternately, you can get demoted, or as they call it, "relegated", to a lower division by scoring the least points. Each season consists of six races. Everyone races one another on each track, so you will only have 4 races. There is a Super League that you can only reach after being the best in Division I, but I can't comment on it because I haven't gotten there myself.
Damage is a very important thing to keep an eye on while you are racing. There are two types of damage and they are both shown on the top bar of the screen. Cracks, the first type, are shown as a crack-like line across the top bar, going from left to right. Once it touches the right side, your car is wrecked and the race is over for you. Structural damage is the other type and occurs from more serious contact. They are shown as wholes and go from the right of the top bar to the left. Once a crack reaches one of these wholes, the crack moves its way to the right faster. Look at the fourth and last screenshots on the right. They each have both damages. The second screenshot on the right only has the cracks. Both types are repaired after practice for the season, but only scratches are repaired after each race. In Division IV, you get a fully repaired car each season.
Stunt Car Racer gives you the opportunity to practice each of the eight tracks. I suggest you do this because it's hard to win races if you aren't used to the track. Practice lets you get a feel for the track, when to go faster, when to go slower. Aside from Division IV, you will probably need to practice the tracks before starting the racing season. What happened to me was I kept wrecking my car until I figured out when to go slow and when to go fast off of different ramps to minimize damage.
Controls:
Space is to turbo/start meaning you need to hit it to get going at the start of the race, but you will automatically be accelerating normally without turbo if you don't have it pressed during the race or after you get dropped by the crane. You run out of turbo eventually and sooner than later in harder divisions so use it with discretion. Space is also the fire button when the game says "Press Fire". The left and right arrow keys steer, and the up and down arrow keys are both brake/reverse. P is pause and unpause and Esc quits the race.
