Summary:
Sid Meier's Pirates! takes place in the 16th and 17th centuries in the Caribbean. You first have to choose between CGA, Tandy-1000, and EGA for graphics. I recommend EGA. Next, answer the drives question (only if you are running it straight from your computer without an emulator like DOSBox) and choose your controller. Now you can either start a whole new career, load one, or play one of six famous expeditions. After choosing settings and giving a name for your selected game, you will be asked a pirate history question. This is the copy protection. If you answer the question right, you start off the game well. If you answer it wrong, you start off in a much harder situation i.e. less gold, men, worse morale, etc. A file entitled Answers.txt will be in the download and will have all the answers.
What's great about this game is the different dimensions. You do all sorts of things including sailing, ship battles, attacking towns, looking for treasure, dueling, and trading. Your goal is to find your four family members, get married to as beautiful a girl as possible, and become rich.
There is a very long and in depth manual of the game here, and it should answer any questions that arise.
Controls:
The arrow keys are used as the main controls in different aspects of the game. They are used to select options, sail, walk, and fight. Enter is fire and space is often pause and resume.
Important Technical Note: When I ran this game in DOSBox, it would sometimes freeze and the little window that shows a graphic would be gray. When I ran it straight from my computer, it was fine. Try running it without DOSBox first, even though many DOS games will not run on the newer operating systems without it.
