Summary:
This is an excellent late '80s RPG which revolves around finding and recovering the six Books of Ys. Like many RPGs it features fighting, quests, gear, and leveling. The max level is low and there are only a handful of different types of swords, shield and armor. Still, this game has a lot of variety in the challenging dungeons and caves.
Fighting has been developed from a unique angle in this game. In order to fight an enemy, all you need to do is run into them. If you run into them face-to-face you will get attacked by them as well. Attacking from the side or behind is safer.
To get you started, make sure to buy a sword, shield, and armor in the town and then talk to Sara the fortune teller. You won't immediately have enough money to buy all three so buy at least the sword and go fight some enemies outside the town to get enough gold.
Some parts of this game are really hard to figure out. This refers mainly to the hidden doors found throughout the game. It is also tough to know what you should be doing sometimes as it seems like there are several quests going on at the same time. A good walkthrough can be found here for such occassions.
Controls:
Movement is done with the arrow keys. To equip items, press I for inventory and then the right arrow so that a box appears around the item. Press down to scroll down to do the same for other items. Enter will exit inventory. S opens up a status box, F1 opens saved games and F4 saves the current game. Esc is pause.
